How was your journey from d ramp 2 d big screen?
It was like a roller coaster ride with lots of toil and hard work. Two
months after becoming Miss India, I signed my first movie so I did not get
a chance 2 model much.
Are you following d recent trend of models turning into actresses?
Well, it is a coincidence that I became a model first and then I got a
chance 2 act. I always wanted 2 act in Bollywood movies. As far as this
trend is concerned, since it exists I can't deny being a part of it.
But I must say that a modelling career can be really short as you are out
of job once they are bored of seeing your face. That doesn't happen in
acting where you can adorn different characters.
How was your first experience on d big screen?
It was thrilling. I got 2 learn so much. Luckily, I got 2 act with some
senior artistes who always made me feel comfortable on d sets. At present
I am a bit nervous, but I hope things will work out well.
What kind of roles are you looking forward 2 playing?
I think d most challenging role is playing a comic character. A number of
offers are coming my way, but I am not a very serious person and would
like 2 do something which goes with my personality.
Any casting couch troubles?
The pageant of Miss India was enough 2 avoid d mess. And if you are
working under an established banner and have calibre, I don't think you
have 2 face such problems.
How does so much skin show justify d need of d script?
These days viewers have become very conscious about it. So d script is
designed in such a way that there is a lot of glamour. There is not much
exposure in Khel.
But in Janasheen, I agree there are a few songs and scenes. But once
again, it gels with d basic idea of d script. Anyway, there are a lot of
actresses doing it. I am not d only one.
A majority of actresses are trying 4 character roles, are you also
planning 2 join d run?
I don't think I am very well groomed 4 very serious or character roles. As
I have just entered d scene, I would like 2 do some light roles like
comedy.

Naomi Campbell has been forthcoming.
According to dusky beauty Nayanika Chatterjee, the answer for this dismal
performance is not far to seek.

"You are a product of your attitude. How comfortable a model is doing the
catwalk with or without clothes depends entirely on how her value system was
shaped in childhood. Remember, in an international modelling assignment your
body is nothing more than a commodity to be displayed to the best effect.
"What we in India deem vulgarity is an exquisite art form for top-notch
designers and choreographers abroad. In fact, nudity is often creative
element in most shows. It is true that many Indian girls baulk at the idea
of exposing beyond a certain point and this can prove to be their undoing,"
says Chatterjee, who is doing her best to make a difference by recruiting
and grooming fresh faces for The Metropolitan Top Model India Contest.
Metropolitan, founded in 1986 by Frenchman Michel Levaton, is one of the
world's leading model agencies and has handled clients like Claudia Schiffer,
Eva Herzigova, Diana Gartner and Tanga Moreau among others. With such
impeccable credentials, the contest could give India its first global
supermodel, claims Chatterjee.
"Killer looks, flair for languages and give-a-damn attitude are only some of
the things that help you make the grade. But money plays an important role
too. It's not easy for a struggling model to survive in the fashion capitals
of the world and without adequate funds, many give up even before they have
properly begun.
"And that is the beauty of a platform like the Metropolitan Top Model India
Contest. With prizes worth Rs 2.5 crores and prestigious contracts up for
grabs, it could be just the window of opportunity a local girl needs to make
it big internationally," she says.
No matter how difficult strutting your stuff on the catwalk, bagging
worldwide ad campaigns is harder still, points out model Sheetal Malhar.
